What is RPG?
RPG is a role playing game. Role-playing is basically acting. In short it means two or more people choosing/creating a character and trying to impersonate them.
RPG Terms You Must Know
GM - Game Master, the mean person who has a right to block you.
PC - The fictional person you are portraying.
NPC - Non-player character, usually created by GM to make the game more interesting.
OC - Original character.
OOC - Out of character.
IC - In character.
RPer - Anyone who roleplays.
Power Playing - Controlling other peoples' characters without a given permission. Also knowing information your character shouldn't know which includes other characters' thoughts, secrets they haven't told anyone etc.
Godmoding - Creating an invincible character although they are able to harm others.
Autohitting - Basically the same as power playing.
Ex. "*Player A's character* hit *Player B's character* and watched them cry." is autohitting, because you probably don't have the rights to say that Player B's character started to cry.
Personie - A person confusing fellow players' character with the player itself.
Ex. Player A is angry at Player B, because Bs' character hit As' character.
Mary-Sues and Gary-Stus - Cliché character who is all the way 'perfect', loved/hated by everyone, but really has no personality.
What is the difference of LARP and online RP?
Larp is the kind of roleplay where the participants physically act out their characters' actions.
Joining a Roleplay
First thing you need to work out is whether you enjoy roleplaying enough to be active. Your fellow RPs won't be too happy when you post once in a month and then disappear.
Read the rules of roleplay and follow them.
Get to know the people, their characters and the story itself.
Creating a character
So now you know the basics, you are ready to make a character. Creating a character can be really fun, but you must be wary. You wouldn't want a copy of someone elses' character, would you?
When creating a character don't start off with a name or a physical description. It may change your character tragically.
Choose the fears and goals for your character. Think about the life they have lived and how it affects their everyday life. Personality is a must!
Creating a shy character can be complicated. You want to have fun with your character, but your overly shy character obviously doesn't talk much to others.
Now you can think a good name for your character and the way they look like.
Now you hopefully have an original character who is ready to change the world.
Posts
Try not to make really short posts with pointless contents like 'He smiled.'. No one cares that he smiled, they are also intrested in fact that he dropped his keys into the pool. 'He smiled absently dropping his keys into the pool.' has more information and gives other players variety of ideas to reply with.
Also give others time to play too. Posting a novel won't make you look good either. Just egocentric.
Understanding Other Players
Good grammar is something that your fellow players will appreciate. Good grammar makes it much easier for them to understand you. When they say or do something that you don't really understand, don't be afraid to ask the player OOC.
Being Logical
So your character meets another character. Unless your character is a crazy pervert they won't tell the other character that they love them. Remember -- they just met!
Lets say your character has a secret you're dying to share with others. Don't. Just like in real life, your character wants to share their secrets with someone they trust and at the proper time.
Conclusion
This guide is just something I put together for you to improve. Following these tips is your own choice, but highly recommended.
